What it sounds like
Major, with no fourth and no sixth, and a major seventh that gives it a floating, Mediterranean light. Calm and spacious rather than bouncy.
Is it a good first handpan?
Yes. Peaceful and very hard to play a wrong-sounding note on.
Try it properly before you buy one. A real D Aegean usually costs NZ$2,000 to 4,000 and makers often have months-long queues.
In Tonefield you can play it in 3D for free, loop yourself, add a beat, turn it into a song and film it in a world of its own,
on your phone or computer. No wrong notes.
